Download files via FTP

Downloading multiple files on put.io is tedious to say the least. Is there a way to download the files via FTP instead?

I second this notion. It's almost not worth the time to download my files currently.

ABSOLUTELY! Yes! For me, it's the UPLOAD from my own LOCAL FILES that is a TOTAL BUST. I need to RESUME, NOT START OVER. And select many files in one swoop.

this sound good to me i have so many problems with download managers starting my downloads from 0% all the time when they was half way through. Is so not fair my bandwith gets wasted

It's even WORSE for me. I often upload or download videos on the train (long
ride, do I get bored). I'm 95% done, we go thru a tunnel, and POOF, gotta
start over! A HAIR PULLING experience.

    Hello Everyone,

Last week we tried a new ZIP Selected architecture which allowed resuming downloads and prevented some most-known errors. But when we published that release, we faced unexpected server problems which forced us to roll back. I can assure you that we're working hard on download failures and we can reimburse your bandwidth for such cases.

For the FTP request, the short answer is "no". Currently we're working on a desktop mounter application which allows you to mount your put.io account to your desktop computer as it was a normal hard drive. Afaik the Windows application is being tested and OS X & Linux applications are still being developed and tested. We'll publicly announce that software once it's ready.

Thanks for your interest in put.io and sorry for any inconvenience you may have with our service. We're working hard to make your experience perfect.

    A little detail would be fine here;
The desktop mounter. How does it work?

    • Like Dropbox? Where it synchronizes the online repository to the local folder so anything goes into Put.IO gets downloaded to that folder and anything I put there goes directly into Put.IO. If so, will it handle resuming on connection problems like Dropbox? Will it provide binary diff method so if I change 2 bytes in a 4GB file, it would not be uploaded completely to the server? Will it have selective sync?

    • As a network drive, where when I access one of the files, it actually handles the IO on the fly and accesses the file on Put.IO. If so, will it create multiple connections? Because most of us can not get full speed from a single connection. Will it handle random access elegantly? What happens when the explorer tries to create thumbnails from videos and pictures? Can I make it download a file with resuming?

I assume you are going for the option 1, which is not suitable to this service. It works fine in Dropbox, where I use it for backups and sharing. But in Put.IO, that has no advantage.

Now, FTP can be used in many different ways. I can use my download manager, I can use an FTP client,. Hell, I can mount an FTP folder to my desktop. I can access it from any OS (including mobile OSs like iOS, Android etc.).

I believe most of your users are tech friendly people. Such a desktop mounter could be great for a service with a lot of grandma's using it. But here, you can actually provide low level access methods, and people will be able to use them. So, why are you going for a "dumbed down" implementation for easier access?

I bother to write this long because I like Put.IO and your work. But I haven't seen any improvement for months here, only a speed test utility and apparently a new ZIP system (which, I don't use a lot).

Why don't we see new encoding options, new seeding options, new archiving options, new access options...? Just because you have been busy creating a desktop mounter?

Well, It better be something great, after all this time.

    Hello Ekin Koc,

We're currently working on a desktop mounter application which will just show your put.io account as an ordinary network mounted disk drive on your computer. Our implementation is based on fuse so your second assumptions are corrent, not the first one. We're also Dropbox users, no need to have another one. :)

We're still working on its working beta but I can tell that it supports multiple connections. Afaik it won't try to create thumbnails because in my own experience with sshfs (on my own servers) it would be laggy. Currently it's in beta stage and we don't have a working OS X - Linux version yet. It'll be using our API btw which is a strong reason for this decision.

I personally would like our service to stay inside the browser but mounter approach will boost some other options. Some of our beta testers have successfully made a fresh install of Ubuntu by using an ISO image on the mounter. It's obviously not for grandma's :)

In fact we're having a progress on our side. We're restructuring our human resources and refactoring lots of code for a better experience. On the long run, we plan lots of features which will hopefully make our users happy. New encoding options are one of them.

We don't promise a scheduled plan for our changes but desire to push releases (including bug fixes and new features) as far as we can. You can follow @putiochangelog for future changes & releases.

    Tunix,

I simply do not understand your company's unwillingness to implement one of the most widely used file transfer-related protocols on the internet. Why go to all the bother to work on a fuse-based implementation when you can just enable FTP and users can use an FTP client to transfer their files efficiently and effectively?

    Please explain.

NOT that I don't APPRECIATE having an additional, software-based option (and
I do see advantages of software option, that's why I have Dropbox and
JungleDisk), BUT: WHY NOT have FTP access ALONGSIDE a custom solution,
since it's relatively low-rent and rather easy to implement with what you
    got already? O:o)
… in the meantime, while we're waiting for the software testing to iron
    things out.
And a BIG issue is, ACCESSIBILITY. EXACTLY LIKE HTTP, FTP is easily and
NATIVELY supported by MOST devices, even those not running a full-fledged
browser. I could use FTP on my phone, while taking advantage of extra
    features AT HOME. No?
NOBODY's saying scrap the software. We're saying, why not have one more
solution, with no extra work, cause it's already BUILT IN!

    Hey guys,
We are not against FTP at all. We would like Put.io to be accessed via any device and software. FTP may very well be one of the ways. Let me state that we hear you.

This is in fact a priority issue.

Currently we are focused on the core features (like streaming, download speeds, system health, fetching performance) to provide better service quality.

Mounter is a side project which doesn't slow our development at all. It's developed by one of our friends who is experienced in file systems and wanted to contribute to Put.io. We're very excited about it and support it in any way we can.

Thanks for all the feedback. We really appreciate it.

    Best regards,
    Cem

Both Mounter and FTP would be fantastic, I greatly appreciate the efforts the put.io team is going to to respond to customer feedback and improve the service

It's great to hear that FTP can be considered (which would also support FXP, right?) instead of a short statement like "no to FTP". I really like to know that we are heard, and things in put.io work in a not-apple-like fashion =)

I'm looking forward to both your desktop software AND FTP...

    Hi there,

For those of you who are waiting for an FTP option, our good friend @aybarsbadur has cooked up a python FTP connector. You run the connector locally and then connect with an FTP client to your localhost. (You can even rename your files using it :)

Now this is not official put.io business, and we can't give support for it, but it might just work for you.

Please give it a try: https://github.com/ybrs/putio-ftp-connector
