Slow downloading
In the last few weeks I've had some problems downloading files at high speed.
I have a 10Mb/s connection, and until about a month ago was consistently able to download files from put.io at full speed.
While I type this I can only manage 314Kb/s (about 1/4 of my max speed).
I don't seem to have any issues with other download sources. I just downloaded an ISO from a Microsoft server and yesterday downloaded 2GB from an FTP at full speed.

Also I should add that I've tried the alternate download route, but it didn't help. Also I'm using Firefox 3.6.6. I've also tried Chrome to the same result.

Hey David,
Currently we dont have any bandwidth congestion. I beleive its an inter-ISP situation. Putting a mirror close to your location may help. Which country are you located in?
Thanks for the info.

Ontario, Canada.
I have a bunch of friends in this part of the country that are having the same issue. We're on different ISP's (I'm on Rogers, others are on Sympatico and Cogeco).
One of my friends has already canceled his subscription because it was so bad for him. I'm not near that yet, but it is getting frustrating.

Hello David,
We'd be happy to set up an alternative route through Canada.
But we don't know anything about the dedicated server scene in Canada
and we're having a hard time finding a good dedicated server.
Maybe you could recommend a reputable, cheap and honest isp with
datacenters physically in Canada
Thank you.
Hasan.

Wow, that would be great.
I would recommend using a site in Toronto. I don't live there, but it's the traffic hub for this part of the country.
My number one choice would be http://www.q9.com/. They're #1 by far, but not a cheap option.
My second choice would be http://www.fusepoint.com/.
I haven't dealt much with cost conscious options. I'll ask around and see if any options stand out.

Yeah, Q9 and Fusepoint asked for thousands of dollars.
Thank you very much. I'm looking into them all.
Hasan.

Hello there.
Same issue here. Zip file download stops at around 631kb. and file download is really slow. It says it'll take 8 hours for a 350MB file.
I live in Japan.
Thank you for your attention.
12 Posted by Yue on 21 Aug, 2010 02:57 PM
Continuing with the discussion. I tried again tonight and speed hasn't changed. I have lost 1 GB of bandwidth (says I have 49 G remaining) but I haven't been able to download any file.
Any plans to set alternative routes to Japan?
Thank you.

Yue, i was wondering, have you tried:
a, download manager (free download manager is good one)
b, try the alternative route in your Account> setting
c, turn off https
also are you having this issue if you try to download files 1 by 1 ?
can you stream video in your browser?

Thank your very much for your response.
I tried using wget (I use Linux ass main OS), but it didn't show any improvement. But as soon as I tried the "alternative route" in settings, I could download a 350MB file in 5 minutes!
I will try with a bigger file now.
Thanks a lot!

I'm having dl speed issues as well. My provisioned speed is 10mbit downstream, and I can dl from RS at around 1MB/s.
However I can currently get 125 KB/s through the default and about 400 KB/s through the alternate path.
Can you suggest a solution? i tried concurrent connections with flashget with the same results.
Thanks
atakan

Reviving this thread.
I'm having dl speed issues again. The speed never goes up 300k, I have tried to change routes (I normally use the alternative one), but no effect.
I thought it could be a temporary issue, but it's been a day now and still no change. I'm trying to download a 4.4GB file and it will take at least 4 hours :/
Any solution?
Thank you very much!

Hi Yue,
Can you try using a download manager?
Downthemall extension for Firefox is free and works good.

Hi Hasan.
Normally I use curl.
Let me try installing that one, although I'm more a Chrome user ;)
I'll let you know if that works.
Thank you for your reply :)
21 Posted by Yue on 07 Jan, 2011 01:27 PM
Ok, trying with Downthemall.
The speed improved a little, to an average of 500KB. Using alternative route.
Let me finish this download to see if there are changes in the speed.
Thank you!

We would love it if you could recommend a cheap dedicated server
located in Japan, so we can try to setup an asian tunnel.
Please also try the US routes, I hear our US provider has good
peerings in Asia.
Thank you.
