Goal: Use the Put.IO Plex plug-in to stream video from Put.IO directly to my Roku N1000!

Requirements: Put.IO account, downloaded video content, PC or MAC with the latest version of Plex Media Server up and running, Roku N1000

Hello everyone. I wanted to share with you some experimentation that led to a very positive outcome.

Today, I found out that an exceptional developer Jonny Wray created a Roku channel / client for Plex.

More info here: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/forum/84-roku-streaming-players/

I easily installed the private channel for my Roku via their website by choosing "Add private channel" and entering "plex" Jump into the channel Store then out to make the Plex channel shows up right away. Make sure that you have version 1.1 5-6-2011 at a minimum of the Roku Plex channel.

I installed Plex Media Server 0.9.207 (PMS) on Windows 7 64-bit. Everything worked fine except the Roku Plex channel couldn't see the server initially. I corrected this problem by switching the network mode from Public to Home in Network & Sharing Center then restarted my Plex Media Server. Don't forget to OK the firewall exceptions. Also, in PMS Preferences, check "Disable compatibility settings" to allow all plug-ins to try to work with the Roku.

Next, the Roku Plex channel connected OK to my PMS. Great! I browsed under channels and found Put.IO down deep under Media Types | Movies (maybe an easier way but I couldn't find an alphabetical list, for example). I installed the Put.IO channel and thought I was all ready to enter my API secret and key, browse my Put.IO folders and stream video.

Nope! When I entered the Put.IO channel it asked me to login then when I clicked that it said "retrieving..." forever. I reasoned that perhaps the Put.IO plug-in for Plex would not be able to provide me the login screen on my Roku and therefore I couldn't get to my account's contents. So, I dug around in the Plex Plug-ins folder for the Put.IO plug-in preferences.

Solution:
Under C:\Users[username]\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Preferences was a file called "com.plexapp.plugins.putio.xml" I opened it up in PSPad text editor and edited two values:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>

[from Put.IO Settings] [from Put.IO Settings]

I changed those two values, went back downstairs and tried the Put.IO Plex channel again.

Success!

I could browse my custom folders, items shared with you and see an AVI in my root folder Your Files. I streamed that AVI (XVID, MPEG Audio) from Put.IO right to my Roku! Amazing. Now, I don't have to download video, copy it to a USB and play it from my Blu-ray player with its media player.

Saves time and really lets me get the most out of Put.IO.

Basically, I overcame a few hurdles:
1) Needed a Plex channel/client for Roku and it debuted 5/3/2011
2) Needed to get the PMS working on my Windows 7 machine (***limitations are no Flash or Silverlight channels like Hulu...yet!)
3) Put.IO Plex channel was hanging because it couldn't login, solved by manually editing the login preferences text file

Limitations:
1) Roku Plex channel only supports video content...for now
2) Should work for other Roku devices but untested
3) Should work with PMS for Mac including Flash and Silverlight but untested

Finally, Put.IO streams directly to my Roku with the new Roku Plex channel / client!

Hope this helps,
heyadam
